Spotify Rolls Out New AI Music Labels and Anti-Spam Measures
Spotify has introduced significant updates to its AI policy, aiming to enhance transparency around AI-generated music, tackle spam uploads, and clarify the platform's stance on unauthorized AI voice clones. These changes reflect the company's commitment to adapting to the rapid evolution of AI within the music industry.
Industry Standard for AI Music Disclosure
One of the core updates is Spotify’s adoption of the DDEX standard, a forthcoming industry-wide protocol for identifying and labeling AI-generated music in track credits. This system will require labels, distributors, and music partners to submit detailed AI usage disclosures, specifying whether AI was used for vocals, instrumentation, or post-production. Spotify believes this nuanced approach will avoid forcing creators to label music as simply 'AI' or 'non-AI', better reflecting the spectrum of AI involvement in modern music production.

Crackdown on Unauthorized AI Voice Clones
Alongside clearer labeling, Spotify is reinforcing its policy against unauthorized AI voice clones, deepfakes, and vocal impersonations. Any such content will be removed from the platform. This move aims to protect artists and listeners from deceptive or fraudulent uploads and to ensure that AI is used responsibly within the creative process.
New Anti-Spam Tools and Content Filtering
To combat the rise of spam facilitated by AI tools, Spotify will introduce a new music spam filter later this year. This filter will identify and tag tracks that use manipulative tactics—such as mass uploads, duplicate content, and SEO gaming—and prevent them from being recommended to users. The rollout will be gradual, allowing for refinement as new tactics emerge.

Additionally, Spotify is partnering with distributors to address "profile mismatches," a form of fraud where music is uploaded to the wrong artist’s profile. The goal is to catch these issues before affected tracks go live.
Supporting Responsible AI Use
Despite these stricter controls, Spotify emphasizes support for artists who use AI authentically and creatively. The company aims to enable greater creativity while curbing system abuse.
"We’re not here to punish artists for using AI authentically and responsibly. But we are here to stop the bad actors who are gaming the system, and we can only benefit from all that good side of AI if we aggressively protect against the downside."
- Charlie Hellman, Spotify VP and Global Head of Music

Rising Tide of AI Music
Spotify’s policy refresh comes amid a surge in AI-generated music. For example, the AI band Velvet Sundown recently went viral, sparking debate over labeling practices. Rival platform Deezer reports that over 18% of daily uploaded tracks are now fully AI-generated, highlighting the scale of the shift across the streaming landscape.
Looking Ahead
As AI becomes an integral part of music creation and distribution, Spotify’s updates set a new precedent for transparency and responsible use. The company hopes that wider adoption of standards like DDEX will encourage industry-wide alignment and foster trust among creators, listeners, and rights holders.
