RealSense Becomes Independent to Advance 3D Imaging for Robotics and AI
After over a decade as an innovation hub within Intel, RealSense has officially spun out as an independent company, aiming to scale its stereoscopic imaging technology for broader applications in robotics, AI, and beyond.
What is RealSense Technology?
RealSense develops advanced cameras that leverage stereoscopic imaging—a method that combines two images from different angles, enhanced by infrared light, to create accurate 3D depth maps. This technology plays a significant role in enabling robots, drones, and autonomous vehicles to perceive and interact safely with the physical world. RealSense cameras are also used for secure facial authentication and other vision-driven use cases.
From Intel Incubator to Independent Innovator
Founded and nurtured within Intel for 14 years, RealSense found its niche through experimentation across various sectors, ultimately excelling in robotics. CEO Nadav Orbach, who started at Intel as a CPU architect and later led vision technology efforts, explains the company’s mission: machines operating in the real world need precise, real-time 3D perception to safely take action.
Diverse Industry Applications
- Robotics: Enabling safer, more intelligent robotic navigation and manipulation.
- Agriculture & Aquaculture: Fish farms use RealSense cameras to monitor stock volumes in pens.
- Food Service: Chains like Chipotle utilize RealSense, through AI partnerships, to track inventory levels and optimize kitchen operations.
With over 3,000 customers, interest in RealSense's technology has surged, especially as AI capabilities have expanded and new automation opportunities emerged.
Why the Spinout?
To keep pace with growing demand and accelerate innovation, RealSense decided to leave Intel and chart its own course. This move was approved by Intel leadership and supported with a $50 million Series A funding round, led by Intel Capital and strategic partners. The fresh capital will help RealSense build its go-to-market team and advance its technology, with a focus on improving safety in human-robot interactions and enhancing access control solutions.
Looking Ahead
CEO Nadav Orbach and his experienced team are energized by the new independence. They believe their blend of deep technical knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit positions RealSense for success as they help shape the future of 3D perception in AI-powered industries.
