Orchard Robotics, a fast-growing agri-tech startup, has secured $22 million in Series A funding to advance its AI-powered crop monitoring solutions. The investment round was led by Quiet Capital and Shine Capital, with additional support from General Catalyst and Contrary. This marks a significant milestone for the company as it aims to transform fruit farming with data-driven insights.
The Vision Behind Orchard Robotics
Founded by Charlie Wu, a former Cornell University computer science student and Thiel Fellow, Orchard Robotics was inspired by Wu’s childhood experiences with his grandparents’ apple farm in China. While at Cornell, Wu noticed a critical gap: even the largest fruit growers had limited visibility into their crops.
Wu explained that most large-scale farms still rely on manual sampling, which often leads to inaccurate estimates and inefficient resource allocation. "If you don’t know what you’re growing in the field, you don’t know how much chemical to apply to it. You don’t know how many workers to hire to harvest it. You don’t know what you can actually sell and market," he highlighted.
How Orchard Robotics Works
Orchard Robotics has developed a compact camera system that mounts onto tractors or farm vehicles. As vehicles move through orchards or vineyards, the cameras capture ultra-high-resolution images of fruits. AI algorithms then analyze these images for key attributes such as size, color, and overall health.
All collected data is uploaded to Orchard’s cloud-based platform, enabling growers to:
- Monitor crop health in real time
- Identify areas needing extra care, like fertilization or pruning
- Optimize harvest planning and marketing strategies
This technology is already in use at some of the largest apple and grape farms in the U.S., and is expanding to crops like blueberries, cherries, almonds, pistachios, citrus, and strawberries.
Competitive Landscape and Future Ambitions
While Orchard Robotics faces competition from companies like Bloomfield Robotics (recently acquired by Kubota), Vivid Robotics, and Green Atlas, Wu believes that the true potential of farm AI remains untapped. The current market for fruit and vegetable data is estimated at $1.5 billion, but Wu sees a future where AI not only analyzes but also automates farm workflows.
"Our ambition is to be a lot more than just collecting data. We want to build an operating system for farms, eventually automating key workflows and expanding our market significantly," Wu stated.
