OpenAI Introduces Affordable ChatGPT Go Plan in India Under $5

OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT Go: A Budget-Friendly Subscription for India
OpenAI has launched a new, affordable ChatGPT subscription tier in India, named ChatGPT Go. Priced at just ₹399 per month (approximately $4.60), this plan significantly undercuts the existing ₹1,999 (about $23) Plus Plan, making advanced AI tools more accessible to India's vast user base.
What Does ChatGPT Go Offer?
- 10x higher message limits compared to the free tier
- 10x more image generations and file uploads
- 2x longer memory for more personalized responses
- Support for local payment methods, including UPI
According to Nick Turley, VP at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, the new plan aims to make premium AI features more accessible to Indian users, while also supporting local currency pricing and popular payment options.
Why Launch in India First?
India is a pivotal market for AI applications. With over 850 million internet users, the country leads in ChatGPT app downloads—more than 29 million in the last 90 days, according to app analytics firm AppFigures. Despite this, app revenues from India remain relatively modest at $3.6 million in the same period, suggesting high demand but limited conversion to paid plans. By introducing a more affordable option, OpenAI hopes to bridge this gap and boost subscriber numbers.
Competing for India's AI Market
India's AI landscape is growing more competitive:
- Perplexity recently partnered with Airtel to offer free Pro subscriptions to Indian users.
- Google launched a free AI Pro plan for India-based students for one year.
While OpenAI's ChatGPT Go isn't free, its local pricing strategy is likely to attract a larger subscriber base and encourage broader AI adoption.
Looking Ahead
This launch reflects OpenAI's responsiveness to user feedback and its intent to expand affordable AI access globally. As Nick Turley stated, feedback from Indian users will shape future rollouts in other countries. With over 700 million weekly ChatGPT users worldwide and growing, affordable plans like ChatGPT Go could further accelerate AI adoption in emerging markets.
