Nvidia Set to Launch New AI Chip Tailored for China Amidst US Restrictions

Nvidia Prepares China-Specific AI Chip to Navigate Export Restrictions

Nvidia is reportedly preparing to debut a new AI chip tailored for the Chinese market as early as September. This strategic move comes as the company adapts to ongoing U.S. export controls that have limited the sale of advanced semiconductor technologies to China.

According to a report from the Financial Times, the upcoming chip will be based on Nvidia’s Blackwell RTX Pro 6000 processor. This version is already modified to comply with existing U.S. AI chip restrictions, ensuring it can be legally exported to China.

Key differences set this China-specific AI chip apart from Nvidia’s premium products. Notably, it will not include high-bandwidth memory or NVLink, Nvidia’s proprietary high-speed, low-latency interconnect. Both features are standard in the company’s most advanced AI chips and are critical for large-scale AI model training, but are restricted under current export rules.

This development follows statements by Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang last month, indicating the company would no longer include China in its official revenue and profit forecasts. However, with the introduction of this specialized chip, Nvidia may be finding new avenues to maintain its presence in one of the world’s largest AI markets.

As global tech regulations continue to evolve, Nvidia’s approach highlights the balance between compliance and market opportunity in the AI semiconductor industry.
