Founded just eight months ago, WaveForms quickly garnered attention in the industry, raising $40 million from Andreessen Horowitz and achieving a pre-money valuation of $160 million, as reported by PitchBook. The company’s mission, as outlined on its now-removed website, was to crack the so-called “Speech Turing Test”—a benchmark for distinguishing between human and AI-generated voices. In addition, WaveForms was developing technology in the field of “Emotional General Intelligence,” aiming to advance AI’s ability to understand and manage individual emotional awareness.
Key Talent Joins Meta
The acquisition brings notable AI talent to Meta, including co-founders Alexis Conneau—a former Meta and OpenAI researcher who contributed to the creation of GPT-4o Advanced Voice Mode neural networks—and Coralie Lemaitre, a former Google advertising strategist.
