Google Adds Seamless Vids Editing Shortcut to Drive Videos

Google Streamlines Video Editing in Drive with New Vids Shortcut

Google has unveiled a new feature that makes editing videos stored in Google Drive faster and more intuitive for Workspace users. The company recently introduced a dedicated shortcut that lets users open videos directly in Vids—Google’s AI-powered video creation and editing tool—right from the Drive interface.

How the New Shortcut Works

When previewing a video file in Google Drive, users will now see an “Open” button in the top right corner. Clicking this button launches the video in the Vids app, where users can immediately start editing. This integration means there’s no need to download the file or manually upload it to another platform, saving valuable time and streamlining the workflow.

Key Editing Features Available

  • Trim and cut video clips with ease
  • Add music, text, and transitions
  • Automatically generate scripts and rearrange clips using AI
  • Create new videos from text prompts with Vids’ generative capabilities

This new shortcut is enabled by default for Workspace users, reflecting Google’s ongoing efforts to unify its productivity tools and leverage AI for content creation.

Part of a Broader AI Push in Workspace

Vids, launched in 2024, was designed to simplify video production for businesses and teams. Its integration with Google Drive is the latest step in making AI-powered editing accessible within familiar workflows. Earlier this year, Google also rolled out a Gemini AI feature that allows users to summarize video files stored in Drive using advanced AI models.

With the addition of the Vids shortcut, Google continues to position Workspace as a robust platform for collaborative content creation—making it easier for teams to produce and polish video assets without leaving the Google ecosystem.
