Duolingo CEO Clarifies AI-First Strategy Amid Public Backlash

Duolingo's recent shift toward an "AI-first" approach sparked significant public debate earlier this year. CEO Luis von Ahn, in a new interview, addressed the controversy and provided more context on the company's intentions and workforce strategy.

Misunderstandings Around the AI Memo

Earlier this year, Luis von Ahn announced that Duolingo would prioritize artificial intelligence in its operations, leading to widespread speculation about potential job cuts and the company's motives. However, von Ahn now says the message was misunderstood, especially outside the company.

"Internally, this was not controversial," von Ahn stated, explaining that the memo created confusion among those unfamiliar with Duolingo's internal processes. As a publicly traded company, he acknowledged that some assumed the move was motivated solely by profit or intended to replace human workers. "And that was not the intent at all," von Ahn clarified.

Commitment to Full-Time Employees

Despite concerns, von Ahn emphasized that Duolingo has never laid off any full-time employees as a result of the AI initiative and has no plans to do so. While the company did reduce its contractor workforce, he explained that this has always fluctuated based on business needs. "From the beginning … our contractor workforce has gone up and down depending on needs," von Ahn noted.

AI Integration and Company Culture

Duolingo's adoption of AI is not just about automation. The company has rolled out AI-created language courses and encourages its team to experiment with the technology. Every Friday morning, employees participate in sessions dedicated to AI projects, humorously referred to as "Fr-AI-days." Von Ahn admitted the name is a bit awkward, but the spirit of innovation remains strong.

Impact on Business and Future Outlook

Despite the initial backlash, the controversy appears to have had little negative impact on Duolingo's performance or growth. Von Ahn remains optimistic about the potential of AI to improve learning experiences and drive innovation within the company.
