Apple Expands AI Tools for Enterprises with Flexible ChatGPT Controls

With the rise of AI in the workplace, Apple is taking decisive steps to make artificial intelligence more practical and secure for large organizations. In its upcoming software updates, set for release in September, Apple is introducing new configuration options that give businesses greater flexibility over how employees access AI technologies—most notably, OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Granular AI Access for Businesses

Apple now allows enterprise customers to configure the use of an enterprise edition of ChatGPT. This move aligns with a growing demand; OpenAI reports that ChatGPT for Enterprise is already used by over 5 million business customers worldwide. These organizations often leverage AI to integrate with internal data and streamline operations.

Not Just ChatGPT: Broader AI Integration

Apple’s approach is unique in that it doesn’t restrict enterprises to only using ChatGPT. According to Apple’s documentation, IT administrators can enable or block any external AI provider—not just OpenAI. This strategic flexibility means Apple could partner with other major AI vendors in the future without rewriting core protocols, giving businesses more options to match their needs.

Enterprise Control and Privacy by Design

Apple continues to prioritize privacy by letting businesses decide whether data is processed in the cloud or directly on devices. This aligns with Apple’s Private Cloud Compute architecture, but also recognizes that enterprises may need time to adopt new data practices. IT teams can selectively enable or disable AI features, including cloud-based ChatGPT requests, even if the business does not have a direct enterprise contract with OpenAI. Importantly, AI requests are never routed from Apple’s cloud to ChatGPT—it's always an either/or setup, making it easier for organizations to manage permissions and maintain data security.

Additional Enterprise Features Rolling Out

  • Apple Business Manager API: Integrate Apple device management with third-party tools like MDM, inventory systems, and help desks.
  • Device Management Enhancements: Simplified migration for devices, especially during mergers or acquisitions.
  • Return to Service Upgrades: Devices can be reset for new users without reinstalling apps, saving time and bandwidth. This feature is now available for Vision Pro as well.
  • Shared Mac Improvements: New authenticated Guest Mode enables secure logins via identity providers, erasing user data (but not apps) upon logout. Support for NFC readers lets employees log in with a simple tap using their watch or phone.

All these tools are set to arrive in September, as part of Apple’s broad software update cycle for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other devices. The changes reflect Apple’s ongoing commitment to balancing user experience, privacy, and enterprise needs in the age of AI.
