AI Transforms 'The Wizard of Oz' for Sphere's Massive LED Experience

The iconic Las Vegas Sphere is set to make cinematic history by screening its first classic film, The Wizard of Oz, in an entirely new format starting August 28. This isn’t just a larger-than-life projection—the film has been reimagined for Sphere’s breathtaking 160,000 square foot wraparound LED screen, thanks to cutting-edge artificial intelligence.

How AI Is Creating a New Cinematic Experience

Behind this ambitious project is a team of 2,000 professionals led by Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan. Their mission: to transport audiences into the heart of Oz like never before. Using advanced AI techniques, the team has enhanced the film’s original footage in two remarkable ways:

  • Resolution Enhancement: Grainy scenes, such as close-ups of Dorothy, have been upscaled into richly detailed imagery, bringing classic moments to life with modern clarity.
  • AI Outpainting: The technology expands the original frame, generating new visuals beyond what was filmed. Viewers can now see more of the Scarecrow, the Yellow Brick Road, and the majestic mountains of Oz, creating a seamless panoramic world.

In some cases, AI outpainting even creates new performances from the original actors, blending classic cinema with digital wizardry. Turner Classic Movie presenter Ben Mankiewicz described this process as making "a grainy close-up of Dorothy become richly detailed, and then through a process called outpainting — though it seems like magic — we see the rest of the Scarecrow, the Yellow Brick Road, and the mountains of Oz."

Preserving the Film’s Original Magic

Despite these technological leaps, the team was careful not to alter the heart of the film. As CEO James Dolan explained, "Our standard on this was not to modify the film at all but to try and bring you into the film, as if you were in the studio when it was shot."

What This Means for the Future of Cinema

This project is a milestone for both AI and entertainment, demonstrating how classic films can be re-experienced in ways that were previously unimaginable. For business owners and creatives in the technology space, it’s a powerful example of how AI can unlock new possibilities for content, audience engagement, and immersive experiences.
